چکیده

Social and biological contagions are influenced by the spatial embeddedness of networks. Historically, many epidemics spread as a wave across part of the Earth's surface; however, in modern contagions long-range edges-for example, due to airline transportation or communication media-allow clusters of a contagion to appear in distant locations. Here we study the spread of contagions on networks through a methodology grounded in topological data analysis and nonlinear dimension reduction. We construct 'contagion maps' that use multiple contagions on a network to map the nodes as a point cloud. By analysing the topology, geometry and dimensionality of manifold structure in such point clouds, we reveal insights to aid in the modelling, forecast and control of spreading processes. Our approach highlights contagion maps also as a viable tool for inferring low-dimensional structure in networks.

Erratum: Topological data analysis of contagion maps for examining spreading processes on networks

In the sixth paragraph of the Methods section of this article, there is a typographical error in the equation [1 À q(t)/N]d NG. The correct version of the equation reads as follows: ½1 À qðtÞ=NŠ d ðNGÞ

Synergistic cumulative contagion in epidemic spreading

Most epidemic spreading models assume memoryless agents and independent transmissions along different infection channels. Nevertheless, many real-life cases are manifestly time-sensitive and show strong correlations. Although some recent research efforts have analyzed the effects of memory and others have explored synergistic contagion schemes, both topics are rarely combined. We develop a micr...

Direct, physically motivated derivation of triggering probabilities for spreading processes on generalized random networks

We derive a general expression for the probability of global spreading starting from a single infected seed for contagion processes acting on generalized, correlated random networks. We employ a simple probabilistic argument that encodes the spreading mechanism in an intuitive, physical fashion. We use our approach to directly and systematically obtain triggering probabilities for contagion pro...

Direct, physically motivated derivation of the contagion condition for spreading processes on generalized random networks.

For a broad range of single-seed contagion processes acting on generalized random networks, we derive a unifying analytic expression for the possibility of global spreading events in a straightforward, physically intuitive fashion. Our reasoning lays bare a direct mechanical understanding of an archetypal spreading phenomena that is not evident in circuitous extant mathematical approaches.

Optimal Deployment of Resources for Maximizing Impact in Spreading Processes

The effective use of limited resources for controlling spreading processes on networks is of prime significance in diverse contexts, ranging from the identification of "influential spreaders" for maximizing information dissemination and targeted interventions in regulatory networks, to the development of mitigation policies for infectious diseases and financial contagion in economic systems. So...
